How does corn compare with other fuel?

What kind of corn do I need to burn?

The units use shelled, whole kernel corn. The best corn is clean and dry (15% or less). Clean corn burns great, but dirty corn with excessive fines and large debris like cobs and stalks may cause some problems. Corn can be purchased from most corn farmers or elevators.

What all comes included in the price of the unit?

The price is for the furnace, hopper and augers. There is no chimney, ductwork or thermostat included in the price.

Are there any options?

A Corn-trol Digital Temperature control system is available at additional cost.

There is an optional domestic water coil if you want to use the boiler for domestic water heating as well.

Do I need a chimney?

Yes, all of our units require a 6" class A chimney. This means that it has to have a natural draft, it can not just exhaust out a wall.

How far can the chimney run horizontally before going vertical?

8" if the farthest we recommend you running a chimney horizontally before going vertical. Heat needs to rise to create draft, and a long horizontal run will diminish the draft too much.

Can I use an existing brick chimney?

If you have an existing chimney you can run a 6" stainless steel liner down and hook that to the boiler, but we do not suggest venting directly into a brick chimney.

We recommend you follow local codes for venting.

Is the unit cheaper if I buy directly from the factory?

No. LMF Manufacturing will not sell direct to a customer when there is a dealer in the area. If there is no dealer in the area then the unit can be bought directly from LMF.

Can this tie in with my existing heating system?

Yes, our units are manufactured to either be a stand alone or an add on to an existing system.

Who does the installations?

We suggest you use a local heating contractor for the installation. A professional installation is a requirement for warranty. Talk with your local dealer, they will be able to help you with that.

How is the unit delivered?

Most units are sent to the dealers and then can be picked up from there.

Is the boiler pressurized?

Yes, the boiler is a closed system and will operate at 12-15 psi.

What water temperature does the boiler run?

The boiler will normally maintain 160-180 degrees. If plumbing into an in floor system, you will use a mixing valve to bring the water temperature down to the recommended level.

Parts are available through the dealers or at most heating stores. LMF uses all industry standard parts so replacement parts are easy to find if needed.

Will I have to clean out clinkers?

No, our units feed the fuel into the bottom and the ashes "boil" over the top of the burn pot and collect in the ash pan. There is a pan that you will need to empty once a week.

Do the units ignite on their own?

No, you will light it at the beginning of the season and it will stay lit for the season on either high fire or a pilot fire, depending on the thermostat.

You will fill the pot with fuel and then use a form of kindling to start a fire on top. Let that fire burn for about 10 minutes and then the fuel will be burning.

No, we do not include plumbing instructions with the boilers as each installation is unique. If you have plumbing questions contact your dealer or HVAC contractors in your area.

Some of our customers have had success with "field controls" model DI-2 Draft Inducer. Inducers are available through LMF. Natural draft chimneys are recommended.
